REACTION
OF THE PRESS COUNCIL IN BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA

at the death threats to Editor and Journalist of FTV,
Mr Bakir Hadziomerovic

The Press Council in Bosnia-Herzegovina seriously condemns repeated death threats to Editor and Journalist of FTV, Mr Bakir Hadziomerovic. Such direct threats and endangering of security for journalist and his family present the most severe and continuous attempts of certain groups and individuals to prevent journalistic activities in field of investigative journalism on corruption, crime and political affairs in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

It is shameful and intolerable that Bosnia and Herzegovina is sinking into darkness caused by lack of media freedom and accurate reporting for citizens of this country, by continuous increase of violence against journalists, open attacks and death threats for journalists. This neglects all positive results achieved so far by adoption of Laws and regulations that, obviously, only formally guarantee freedom of media and freedom of speech in the country.

Unfortunately, this practice is denying everything that government(s) in Bosnia and Herzegovina are citing when speaking about democratic values of the country in terms of media freedom and freedom of journalistic reporting.

In order of protection of journalist Bakir Hadziomerovic and his family, we appeal to Ministry of Inner Affairs of Canton Sarajevo and Federal Police Office, as well as Prosecutors Office of Canton Sarajevo, to conduct the whole investigation procedure, find out the identity and arrest person(s) who send death threats to journalist Hadziomerovic.

The democracy degree of one county is equal to the degree of freedom of media and freedom of speech in that country. We have no doubts that institutions, responsible for detailed investigation, will do everything possible to prevent this country from being at the list of countries where journalists are being killed because of truth.

We are deeply dissatisfied since we have to address again towards our colleagues at the International Federation of Journalists – IFJ, Reporters Without Borders, OSCE and Council of Europe with such negative and crushing news, asking for protection of free journalistic work without fear from being murdered.

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Press Council in B&H,

Ljiljana Zurovac
